Born in New Delhi Kunal Kapoor started off as an actor in theatre. He has done a number of plays and has worked with Motley,
Naseeruddin Shah's theatre group. Kunal always aspired to work in films. Though he was not launched as another super star, he actually started by working behind the scene as an assistant director for Rakesh Mehra's Aks. Kunal finally got a break through into Bollywood as an actor starring opposite
Tabu in Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities (2004). The movie was directed by the one of the finest artist's Indian has produced, M. F. Hussain. The film didn't do that well on the box office as it was too artistic and had a very novel way of story telling. But Kunal did get noticed for his work.
Rakesh Mehra then cast him in a role that would change Kunal's film career for good. Kunal Kapoor starred in Rang De Basanti, a role which brought him into prominence. The film was critically and commercially successful, and it was India's official entry to the Oscars and the Bafta's. Kapoor's performance was acclaimed and he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination. Since Rang De Basanti Kunal has yet to strike gold at the box office as his other releases all bombed at the office, including Yashraj banner movies, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachle. He has also done a cameo in Siddharth Anand's Bachna Ae Haseeno.
Kunal has already thought about his directorial debut. He has a script in place and as of now is under the pre-production stage of casting. Kunal Kapoor has indeed proved to be a brand because of his cool, casual, philosophical and creative personality. He is currently the brand ambassador of Indian Terrain and Thums Up. This lean and handsome hunk has a lot of promise in him.
